A little late to the game, but obsessed none the less…
I don’t know what took me so long to jump on the podcast bandwagon. For years I’ve heard everyone – from friends to coworkers, even my husband, discussing their favorite ones. However, for whatever reason I seemed to dismiss them out of hand, most likely believing that the series would be dull or boring – I mean why would I want to listen to someone rambling for hours on end? I think that I was envisioning a drawn out morning talk show – something that would faster put me to sleep than make me excited to tune in. Of course, I listened to Serial, like the rest of the world, a few years back but still was not entirely sold on this whole genre of audio entertainment. It wasn’t until a few months ago that I discovered the world of fashion and beauty podcasts and now am a complete convert. Read on below for my top picks!
At Home With… – I mentioned this a few months back, but two of my favorite British bloggers/youtubers – The Anna Edit and Lily Pebbles launched a podcast that I thoroughly enjoyed. This really served as the entryway series for my addiction. In each episode they interview a different person from magazine editors to cult beauty product creators in that individual’s home. Recording from each interviewee’s residence truly lends an intimate and personal touch to the episode, where they discuss not only careers, advice, and favorite beauty products, but also interiors, and how/why each room was decorated. The first season is 10 episodes long, but rumor has it that season 2 is on the way!
Fat Mascara – My latest find and possibly my favorite of the bunch if I had to pick. A podcast entirely dedicated to all things beauty. Two magazine beauty editors – Jessica Matlin and Jennifer Goldstein interview beauty industry legends like Bobbi Brown, Harry Josh, and my personal favorite – Jean Godfrey June. In each episode they also discuss current beauty news, trends, and newly released products. The hosts are relatable, comedic, and provide a much needed laid-back approach to the sometimes over the top beauty world. I find it fascinating to hear the inside scoop on the fashion magazine industry, while also learning about successful entrepreneurs’ career paths.
Bitch Sesh – The only one on this list that is not fashion/beauty related – this podcast serves as complete comedic relief for me and will often have me doubled over in laughter, while people stare at me like I have four heads. Two comedians, Casey Wilson and Danielle Schneider, record new episodes every week recapping the latest of Real Housewives episodes and spin offs like Southern Charm and Vanderpump Rules. As a shameless Real Housewives devotee for years, (the purest form of absolute mindless relaxation in my opinion), I find their take on each episode and personality absolutely hilarious. Even if you don’t watch the Real Housewives religiously, it is worth tuning in for the hilarity, understated sarcasm, and musical interludes.
Mirror Mirror – Another one that I have mentioned before and still absolutely adore. This is a Nashville based podcast, where the host, Jesse Harbison, interviews Nashvillian entrepreneurs regarding everything from their career paths, to beauty tips and tricks, as well as their five desert island products. It is an easy one to listen to – one beauty junkie talking to another, while also leading to some great insights and life advice. I also appreciate that it is based in Nashville, one of my favorite cities in the world, where amazing new businesses seem to be popping up all the time like Lemon Laine and Little Seed Farm.
The Emma Guns Show – My final recommendation is one that is hosted by a British beauty industry insider, but goes way beyond makeup and skincare. Emma Gunavardhana interviews everyone from magazine editors, to bloggers, and inspirational authors. To date, one of my favorite episodes was when she interviewed Jen Sincero, author of the self help books – You are a Badass and You are a Badass at Making Money. The podcast is down to earth, featuring great tips on everything from recovering from poor health to maintaining a positive outlook. If you are looking for one that has a bit more of a self-help bent, this might be right up your alley!
Moral of the story is – there is a podcast out there for everyone and once you find one on a topic you connect with, your life will be drastically changed for the better 🙂 A bit dramatic I know, but I now love walking everywhere as I can just plug in an episode and become transported/entertained for hours on end. The best part is – nearly all of these series are entirely free! Most passerbys probably think I am quite insane as I walk around with a huge grin or mildly chuckling to myself depending on the episode. Regardless, I have found so many of them to be motivating, inspiring, chock full of helpful advice, or at the very least hilarious. I would love to know what are the podcasts that you are listening to lately?
