The skin savior that will cure what ails you…
Today’s skincare review seems especially appropriate given all the recent unicorn enthusiasm (see here and here) that the wellness world is going crazy for. The vivid blue color of May Lindstrom’s Blue Cocoon is nearly magical and I believe fairly unicorn reminiscent. I wish that my jar was not nearly empty at the time of photographing these so you could see just how sensational this balm looks. Regardless, beyond the color, the product itself is exceptional and is going into my holy grail category.
Before I delve into the Blue Cocoon itself, I want to touch on May Lindstrom as a brand. They recently received quite a bit of pushback for raising their prices. And while I agree that these products are rather expensive, I find that with skincare as I’ve mentioned previously, you tend to get what you pay for. It is my personal philosophy that if I invest more in my skin, then I won’t have to spend so much on other methods to cover it up or heal it later on in life. Overall, I find that since May Lindstrom’s skincare is handcrafted, made from the best organic ingredients, and shows results – it is worth the higher price. (You can read my review of her mask/cleanser here). The Blue Cocoon is no exception – the price tag is steep but this one jar has lasted me over a year with consistent and very generous amounts “scooped” out each day.
The star ingredient at play here is Blue Tansy essential oil, which is antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and extremely calming. Some other lovely organic ingredients included are camellia seed oil, marula oil, and lavender oil. (Full ingredient list here). I find that when I apply a small amount of this at night or in the morning it alleviates whatever redness, irritation, or even blemishes that I have going on. Upon getting out of bed in the morning I can see a reduction in redness, which is such a life saver and gives me peace of mind – I know that I am not just drying out a spot, but rather moisturizing and healing it. The scent of this product is unique and mesmerizing as well. I am horrendous at describing scents, but it is unlike anything I have ever sampled before. Lightly floral, with almost a faint berry? I have no idea, but it is aromatherapy at its finest. The Blue Cocoon actually seems to relieve any anxiety I have going on and makes me feel like I just walked out of a fancy spa.
The Blue Cocoon has really saved my skin on two separate occasions this year. The first occurred about a week before my wedding back in September. Naturally with everything going on and tying up loose ends after a year and a half of planning, I was a little more stressed than normal. Unfortunately stress leads to breakouts for me and I got a few little red visitors on my forehead – not exactly what I wanted popping up so close to our wedding day. That week leading up to the wedding I put this lovely blue balm on every night and morning as a final step in my skincare routine. Not only was it instantly soothing, but the blemishes dissipated seemingly over night. The other instance that I truly relied on this healing balm was right after our honeymoon in South Africa back in November. Upon returning to the States, the weather was noticeably colder and dryer. Like clockwork, my ultra reactive skin dried up and I developed a lovely red, dry skin rash right on my chin. Blue Cocoon to the rescue again – after about a week of applying the balm, my rash was gone. All of this to say, I really cannot recommend this one enough.
I take a dab of the Blue Cocoon, warm it between my fingers, and apply it as the last step in my skincare routine. (Don’t be like me – you really only need a little bit). I find it is best to apply at night because it has longer to truly sink in, but I have used it during the day as well with great results. This can certainly take the place of your moisturizer in your routine or you can just dab it in specific areas. I actually look forward to applying this daily and will be sad when it is gone. If you decide to give it a whirl, I would love to hear your thoughts!
