The one where I ramble on about my love for turmeric and chamomile.
Apologies if this post seems a little boring or simply reminds you of your grandmother 🙂 However, I truly love tea and over the past few years have realized some of the benefits when I consume the hot beverage daily. For instance, it is known that tea has a slew of health benefits like helping to prevent cardiovascular diseases and cancer, containing high levels of antioxidants to prevent free radicals, and it helps hydrate the body. Personally, I like to sip on caffeine free tea throughout the day, particularly after a meal and right before going to bed. I find that it seems to help me digest, relax, and actually get a better night’s sleep. Now I am not giving up my morning cup of coffee any time soon as I have an unwavering love for our Nespresso. However, I do find that sipping on tea throughout the rest of the day gives me a more consistent, less jittery, level of energy than when I would drink coffee in the afternoon.
I am actually that crazy person who travels with my own tea because I like knowing that it is there should I want some before bed to help me unwind. Below I have listed some of my favorite brands and flavors if you are in the market for some recommendations. I am also sharing my recipe for a turmeric milk latte. Turmeric drinks have become super popular over the past year or so, (sometimes referred to as golden milk), largely due to the fact that turmeric spice is an extremely powerful antioxidant and can help fight inflammation. A couple months ago, I came down with a pretty bad cold and made quite a few batches of this turmeric tonic. It certainly helped kick the sickness out of me so I wanted to share the recipe with you as well. I hope you like it!
Sleepytime Vanilla – This is the tea that truly started the obsession for me. I remember that my mom used to give it to us when we were young and to this day it automatically calms and relaxes me. I love the slight hint of vanilla in this version and I drink a mug of this nearly every night before I go to bed.
Pukka Detox – Pukka tea is a fairly recent discovery for me that I found when browsing at Whole Foods a few months ago. I love the freshness of it – full of cardamom, aniseed, fennel, and licorice, it has kind of a zippy taste. To me it is even subtly sweet and seems to provide a burst of energy even though it is caffeine free. I like sipping on this one throughout the afternoon.
Rishi Turmeric Ginger – This is my favorite option for digestion after a meal. The ginger always soothes my stomach and again the turmeric acts as a wonderful anti-inflammatory. This one is loose leaf, so I would recommend investing in a tea kettle made for loose tea. We have this one and really like it, it’s functional but also looks pretty!
- 1 cup almond milk*
- 1.5 tsp maple syrup
- 1 tsp ground turmeric
- 1 tsp fresh grated ginger
- pinch of cinnamon
- Place the almond milk in medium saucepan and heat over low-medium for about 2 minutes.
- Once hot enough to drink, stir in the maple syrup, turmeric, and ginger.
- Pour into a mug and top with a pinch of cinnamon if desired.
Hopefully I didn’t put you to sleep reading this, but let me know if you give the latte a try or have any versions of your own. Have the best day!
