A little catch up after what I’m calling summer break for adults.
The past few months have been a little hectic in the best kind of way – i.e. I started a new job; we got a puppy named Tallulah – who I am completely in love with; and then traveled around for a couple of vacations to Scotland, London, and Hilton Head Island. We had a fabulous few months and sometimes you need a little change to keep life interesting. I am a firm believer that when you take some time off, spend days outside, and connect with family – you come back rejuvenated and bursting with inspiration. Thus, after all that summer adventure (escaping without too terrible of a sunburn), I am also happy to report that life seems to have calmed down a bit and I am looking forward to getting back to some regular posting/musings/ramblings over here.
Today’s post is focused on all of the things that are somewhat new to me or that I have really been loving, (surviving with), over the past couple months. Consider this my summer catch up – similar to when you return to your school friends after being away at camp all summer (tanner, refreshed, new you – or at least some great new finds to tell everyone about). 🙂
Without further adieu my favorite topic – all things beauty/wellness related.
Osmia Organics Black Clay Facial Soap – I have never in my life used bar soap on my face – always opting for some version of a liquid cleanser – everything from oil to foam, milky consistency etc. Bar soap reminded me of something harsh and stripping, not a substance I would want to put on or near my face. However, after reading a few positive reviews – this one struck my fancy as it is formulated for breakout prone skin, a true summer annoyance for me. It is fair to say that I love it and am absolutely a bar soap convert. It deep cleans beautifully removing all the grit, grime, and sweat, reduces redness, halts breakouts entirely, and bonus… lasts forever! I’ve taken to using it as my second cleanse at night, following the One Love Organics Vitamin B Cleansing Oil, as well as my morning cleanse.
Body Oil – I am one hundred percent on the oil bandwagon after using lotion for years and years post shower. Very silly – I was missing out on life! All those precious moments waiting for lotion to sink in, gone forever. I’m telling you oil is the answer – pat it in apres shower when skin is still damp. It sinks right in, skin feels smooth (dare I say more hydrated than with lotion), and you can throw on clothes and go. Also, it doesn’t have to be expensive – right now I am loving the coconut dry oil spray from Acure Organics, which I picked up at Whole Foods. (Smells like pina coladas and summer dreams). Bonus points because it is a spray formula, as Ina would say – how easy is that?
Face Oil too! – I have taken to just using oil as my serum/moisturizer on my face at night rather than locking it in with a heavy duty cream moisturizer like I did for far too long. Specifically I am loving this one and this one right now. Who knew that by paring down my routine my skin would be on its best behavior. I’m slowly starting to understand that some of those weightier creams were actually clogging my pores.
Care/of Vitamins – After seeing some bloggers and youtubers mention this company, I decided to give it a whirl. You fill out an online quiz and based on your answers, a personalized pack of vitamins is created for you – magic! I like that it can be entirely customized based on dietary preferences, current needs, and essentially takes all of the annoying leg work out of supplements. Who has time to research each and every one? My pack is vegan and contains nutrients I need like B-12 as well as supplements such as rhodiola (anti-stress), Magnesium (better sleep!), probiotics (gut health), etc. Each shipment comes with 30 individual packs of pre-portioned daily vitamins – easy to grab a few for travel as well. You can also cancel, pause, or change your pack at any time. So far I’m really loving the ease and the fact that I am actually remembering to take vitamins on the regular.
Minimal Makeup – At this point I know that summer and simple beauty routines are a bit synonymous, if not cliche. But this year, more than ever before, I’ve found myself reaching for fewer products and actually loving the results – not to mention the mere 10 minutes it takes to complete. More time for the beach, exploring, running errands – whatever floats your boat. I honestly haven’t been that adventurous with my beauty products either, opting to stick with tried and true favorites like this mascara. The RMS pots have still been in heavy rotation, perfect for on the go application; a quick blend with your fingers and you are out the door. The Un Coverup in 22 is perfect for concealing any dark circles or red spots, while the lip2cheek in demure is my go to for adding just a hint of natural looking color to my face. Yet, the real standout of my summer beauty routine has been the Jane Iredale PurePressed Foundation in Golden Glow, which I rambled on about in this post. I have now gone through nearly the entire pan and am due for a repurchase. I adore the simplicity of swirling the brush and just tapping on where I want a little extra coverage plus SPF. Also, the fact that it is a powder formula means less of a greasy mess at the end of the day.
A few pieces that feel fun, effortless, and light even in 100 percent humidity.
Zara gingham dress – After seeing nearly every girl in London wearing this dress, I purchased it almost immediately upon returning home. (Unfortunately it is sold out now but this is a really similar option). At $25, it seemed like a no brainer and I am so glad that I went for it. The perfect summer throw on and go piece – super light for humid, sticky days, while still managing to look effortlessly pulled together. I wore it a bunch in Hilton Head as well because it is an item that can actually take you from plane to pool. The gingham trend is still going strong and I don’t see the classic print slowing down any time soon – fall wardrobe get ready!
Statement Earrings – For whatever reason I am loving big, bold designs more than ever right now. They beautifully elevate even the most simple outfit, no other accessories needed. I have been wearing these and these on repeat. Also, loving the looks of this pair from J. Crew right now.
Quay My Girl Sunglasses – I’ve mentioned my love for sunglasses before, but believe that I have finally found the perfect shape for my face. The cat eye is a classic as Who What Wear points out and I like that they are slightly retro and feminine. I look forward to wearing this oversized pair nearly every day now – they are super lightweight, but cover up sleep deprived eyes like a pro. (It doesn’t hurt that they will not break the bank either).
Alex Monroe Jewelry – My mom and I discovered this jewelry designer in London, first at their counter in Liberty and then we tracked down their adorable stand alone boutique. Alex creates gorgeous, dainty, and whimsical pieces that are right up my alley and instantly caught my eye. His designs are inspired by nature, with his signature being the bumblebee. Upon arrival at the boutique it was painstaking to pick out which piece to go home with as I loved nearly everything in the shop. Eventually I landed on the hummingbird, which I am thrilled with as it is delicate enough for daily wear, but super unique with the three dimensional design. My mom went with the bicycle, which is so sweet – the wheels actually turn! We also spent a great deal of time chatting with the store managers, who could not have been more kind. It was so nice learning more about Alex as well as the company – every piece is handmade in London at their studio just down the street. I can absolutely see this one becoming a bit of a go-to for special occasions and birthdays.
That’s it for now as this round up is getting a little lengthy, congrats if you made it through this far! Stay tuned for the next post coming shortly featuring all my lifestyle finds/discoveries from June and July. I hope you are having the best summer and let me know in the comments any new bits that you have found and loved.
P.S. I am thinking of making this a more routine feature on the blog – a monthly favorites of sorts to cap off each month and put in one place all the things.
