Non-toxic sunscreen exists and I promise they won’t leave you looking like Casper the Ghost.
Today’s post is entirely inspired by my life long friend, Rachel 🙂 She reached out to me the other day asking about some non-toxic/organic SPF options. I realized that with summer, warmer weather, and beach days fast approaching this is a topic that many of you might be curious about. Luckily, I’ve been able to find some great products that protect your skin from harsh UV rays, while actually nourishing it at the same time. Seems almost too good to be true as most conventional sunscreens, (especially ones for the face), are chalky, lead to breakouts, provide an unpleasant residue, and are laden with chemicals that we probably don’t want to be smearing all over our faces. Read on below for details on my top organic sunscreen/moisturizer hybrid picks.
After seeing countless rave reviews about the Josh Rosebrook organic skincare line, I finally decided to give it a whirl and I am so happy that I did. Bloggers and reviewers have been touting his Nutrient Day Cream as the perfect moisturizer that nourishes the skin, provides a glow, and also happens to include SPF. I have to say – I completely agree. Of all the products I am talking about today, this one edges them out for the incredible ingredient list – think aloe vera, evening primrose oil, hemp seed oil, and jojoba oil to name a few. Zinc oxide is the sunscreen ingredient and does not make my acne prone skin break out whatsoever. In fact, I’ve found that this moisturizer actually calms any redness/inflammation that I have lurking around. The scent is super light and calming as well – a huge thumbs up from me! Since my skin is combination and can lean towards oily, I find this is all that I need as a moisturizer in the am. It goes on beautifully underneath makeup and actually adds a subtle glow to your face rather than the chalky white mask that many of us are accustomed to in traditional formulas. On good skin days I can get away with just using the tinted version and a bit of concealer. This comes in a 1 0z and 2 0z size, so if you are not completely sold – try the smaller size first. (But I can almost promise you will be back for more). Also, while you’re there – give his Hydrating Accelerator a test, pure magic! My new favorite mist as a toner or midday pick me up.
This is a wonderful option if you are looking for a BB cream type of product, with light coverage. (I only had the sample size left to photograph for this post since I went through the full size so quickly!) I use the shade light and would compare the formula and coverage to the Nars tinted moisturizer that I used religiously for years or the It Cosmetics CC cream. However, Suntegrity is so much cleaner and boasts exceptional ingredients such as coconut oil and aloe vera. By leaving out all of the toxic parabens, sulfates, and titanium dioxide it might seem like this one is too good to be true. However, I promise that it really works and in fact has won quite a few awards in the green beauty world. The only con I can see with the formula is that the scent can be a bit strong (not terrible – just a little sunscreeny smell that lingers). Thus, if you are sensitive to that type of thing, it may be something to consider. But overall, I really love this SPF (as documented by the lighting speed that I went through the bottle) and think that the finish is beautiful – subtle coverage with a little healthy glow added in.
Far and away my choice for an all over body SPF. It is perfect for those beach days that I pray are coming soon. I went through an entire bottle of this on our recent trip to Aruba and for once enjoyed reapplying it. I used the unscented formula and can attest that it was just that, not cloying at all. However, if you like a little fragrance, I bet the plumeria or mimosa would be super refreshing. The texture is light, sinks right in, and actually feels like a moisturizer – not a chalky, heavy sunscreen. This is perfect for me as I have notoriously dry skin on my legs/arms. It actually feels very cooling when applied which was a lovely surprise and saved me from some of the intense red burns that I saw roaming around. As hard as I try, I am typically overzealous with the sun and tend to be the first one burnt on vacations. Not only is that uncomfortable but it can lead to serious repercussions down the line. I am happy to report that through using and reapplying the COOLA, I did not get burnt on this trip. Win! I used the lotion version because that is what I prefer but they also make a variety of sprays. COOLA incorporates a long list of organic ingredients including: kernal oil, cucumber fruit extract, evening primrose oil, rose hip fruit extract, and olive fruit oil to name a few. I also appreciate that their line is widely available – everywhere from Sephora to Nordstrom. (Since I used up my entire bottle on vacation I did not have it to photograph for this post, but will definitely be repurchasing soon!)
There you have it – my top choices for eco-friendly and non-toxic SPFs that work beautifully and include some extra skin nourishing benefits. Going into the warmer months sun protection is so important to prevent not just premature aging and hyper pigmentation, but also skin cancer. As a young tennis player, I was not nearly careful enough and exposed myself to the sun without protection probably way too often. I was lucky and escaped with just some mild melasma on my cheeks but today am so cautious and really make sure to always have SPF on when I leave the house. I hope these recommendations are helpful if you are looking for a new formula, but don’t want all the chemicals. Let me know in the comments if you have any questions!
