Everything that helps a chronic worrier unwind, right this way…
Confession, I am not a good sleeper – never have been and probably never will be. As a child I remember lying awake for hours, trying to force that restful state and then eventually waking up at the crack of dawn and jumping on my parents’ bed ready to start the day! (Just my luck – we will one day have a child with a similar zest for mornings and distaste for sleep). 🙂 Regardless, I am one of those people that never seems to stay asleep for that long. Throw in a bit of stress/anxiety and just forget it, my mind could wander for hours on end. While I have come to accept the fact that I may never be one of the lucky ones who can enjoy a solid (and recommended) eight hours every night, I still aim to maximize the sleep that I do get and try to fall asleep as seamlessly as possible. Over the years I have found a few tricks and products that help me reach a more zen state pre-bed and allow me to fall asleep as easily as possible. You certainly do not need to implement all of these practices right away, but I find that having any type of daily methodology before hitting the sheets is a stress reliever in and of itself. And stress reduction is something that I’m sure we could all use a bit more of this time of year with lots of events, get togethers, and planning on the horizon. Read on below for everything that I swear by to help me acquire that quality shut eye.
Tea – Are you surprised?!? About an hour before I am going to head to bed I brew a cup, which seems to instantly soothe and relax. Right now I am loving this and this. Sometimes I even sip it while doing my nightly skincare.
Silk pillowcase – This may seem like a bit of an investment – but trust me they are worth it! Every hairstylist I know will recommend one of these as silk is much more gentle than cotton and will not lead to breakage. Furthermore, it is better for your skin and you can rest assured knowing that all of your expensive products are sinking into your face, not just your pillowcase over night. Apparently it helps prevent wrinkles as well. Win – win, not to mention silk is so soft!
Pillow Spray – These types of sprays seemed to have gained a ton of popularity on the market over the past few years. I really do appreciate the power of aromatherapy for soothing and calming. My personal favorite is this all natural blend, that smells lightly of lavender and vanilla but is not overwhelming. I spritz about three times on my pillow and even Tallulah seems to enjoy it. 🙂
Hand cream – This step is crucial, especially during this time of year when our fingers tend to dry out – leading to painful cracks. I slather this one on before bed and my hands feel so much softer throughout the entire day. Unfortunately, I was out of my beloved Apotheke at the time of shooting these photos. This Neal’s Yard formula is a nice alternative.
Lip balm – Last but not least I love to throw on a nourishing and thick balm for the same reason as above. Cracking, painful lips are not fun and this formula seems to solve all those issues. Bonus – I can still feel it on my lips in the am when I get up. (As an extra, I also love this multi-purpose balm that I picked up in Nashville. Clary Collection is a small batch, apothecary line based there. It is perfect for anywhere you need a little extra nourishment – lips, cuticles, even feet).
I hope that was helpful for any other sleep strugglers out there. I am super nosy and love hearing how other people unwind as well. Let me know in the comments below if you have any tried and true tips.
